BECHTELSVILLE, PA March 27, 2009 . . . Will there be a new Modified stock car champion at Grandview Speedway this season? Since 2000 the championships have been shared between Jeff Strunk, the first seven time champion in track history, and Craig VonDohren, six titles to his credit with some going back to the late eighties. Many racers feel it is time for a change.
The battle for the lucrative NASCAR Whelen All American Modified championship gets the green on Saturday, April 4th when the 47th consecutive season of professional stock car racing starts at 7 p.m.
Strunk and VonDohren are both seated with new owners for the 2009 season. Strunk, who calls Mohnton, PA home, will be in the No. 41 Vince Gagliardo owned Vince’s Automotive & Towing Service modified. Boyertown based VonDohren will be driving for well known car owner Chad Sinon in the BPG Racing No. 1c modified stock car.
Both drivers will have bull’s eyes on their backs as there is a long list of talented racers that want to take the title away from them and earn the more than $10,000 in point fund money and other perks that goes to the championship team courtesy of track owner Bruce Rogers and NASCAR.
Ryan Godown, off to a strong start this season in racing events at other local speedways, will be looking to knock Strunk and VonDohren out of the top spot as will Mike Gular, former champion Terry Meitzler, Jon Kellner Sr., Meme DeSantis, Jason Hamilton, Doug Manmiller, Danny Hieber and a host of others.
Despite winning the most races in 2008 Randy Stoudt had to settle for second place in the Late Model standings behind four time champion Chuck Schutz. Both will be back battling for the title this season as will past champions Brian Shuey and Ron Kline along with Mike Kellner, Rick Todorow, Kyle Merkel and others.
The doubleheader show that opens the season on Saturday, April 4th will include a 40-lap main event for the modifieds paying $3,000 to the winner and a 20-lap feature for the late models. A full series of qualifying events will lead up to the features. RCN-TV will be on hand to tape the action for future broadcast.
Admission for adults to the season opener is $15 while children 6 through 11 pay $5 and under 6 are admitted for FREE. There is always free parking on the speedway grounds and fans are invited to bring their own refreshments (no glass bottles allowed).
Grandview Speedway will be presenting racing action each Saturday night through September with a variety of special events planned including eight Sunday Enduro races and six Thunder on the Hill midweek spectaculars.
The track is located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100, in Bechtelsville, PA, 10 miles north of Pottstown. For information telephone 610.754.7688 or check in at www.grandviewspeedway.com
