VONDOHREN AND SHUEY TAKE TOP HONORS AT GRANDVIEW
Saturday, April 25, 2009

BECHTELSVILLE, PA APRIL 26, 2009 . . . Six time track champion Craig VonDohren was able to hold off some strong challenges from his teammate Duane Howard to win the 30-lap Jeff D’Ambrosio Dodge NASCAR 358 Modified feature at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. The 20-lap main event for the late models was won by Brian Shuey for his second win of the season.

VonDohren, at the wheel of the Chad Sinon owned BPG Racing No. 1c, started in 12th in the feature event and had a great seat to see all the excitement as John Tschudy led the first three laps. Jon Kellner Jr. drove into the top spot coming off the fourth turn on the 4th circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval. Kellner looked like he might be on his way to his first career modified victory but on the 12th lap mechanical woes sent him to the pits done for the night.

Billy Pauch Jr., also looking for his first Grandview feature win, took over the leadership position and held the top spot until the 25th lap. With a caution out for Don Norris’ blown engine which spread smoke all over the track area, Pauch came to a stop in turn three. Unable to get the Pioneer Pole Building No. 8p started Pauch was pushed to the pits.

On the restart VonDohren (Boyertown) took command and created a little of his own excitement riding to a narrow victory over Duane Howard (Oley) who was in another Chad Sinon owned BPG Racing entry. Third place was earned by Tom Umbenhauer (Richland) followed by last week’s feature winner Kevin Hirthler (Boyertown) and seven time track champion Jeff Strunk (Mohnton). Hirthler came from 16th starting spot while Strunk came from 14th.

By virtue of his second place finish Howard was able to hold on to his point lead in the chase for the modified title. Howard came from 15th starting spot.

In victory lane VonDohren said, “It was good to get a victory for Chad (Sinon). Keep the wins coming.” It was the first win of the season for VonDohren and his first for new car owner Chad Sinon.

Bill Henning charged to the front in the 20-lap feature race for the late models and made a strong showing, giving the impression he just might be on his way to a feature win. Henning and Kellner put on quite a battle for the top spot in the early stages of the race.

At the 12 lap mark Brian Shuey was able to charge to the front and that is where he stayed for the balance of the feature earning his second win of the season.

In victory lane the Shoemakerville racer said, “I just had to do that. It is a team sport and I have a great team. However I left the team down last week when I spun out on my own. Hopefully this makes up for it.” Shuey’s voice seemed to be cracking as he spoke and thanked all of his sponsors.

Second spot went to young Danny Snyder (East Greenville) followed by Mike Kellner (Lansdale), Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Ron Kline (Salfordville).

The Cornerstone Auto Sales of Fleetwood Hard Chargers awards went to Meme DeSantis in the modifieds for gaining 14 positions and to Randy Stoudt in the late models for gaining 11 positions.

Qualifying events for the late models were won by Bill Henning, Brian Shuey and Mike Kellner. In the modifieds the qualifying heat wins went to Kerry Kratz, John Tschudy, Craig VonDohren and Jon Kellner Sr. The consolation wins went to Don Norris Jr. and Sean Merkel.

Racing action gets the green at the new starting time of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2nd when National Earth Services sponsors the doubleheader show featuring the Modifieds and Late Models. ARDC wingless midgets join the action on Saturday, May 9th along with the NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Late Models. It will be Dover International Speedway Promo Night with fans having the opportunity to win tickets to their races and other prizes.
