BECHTELSVILLE, PA May 31, 2009 . . . With eight feature races run at Grandview Speedway for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds so far this season there have been eight different winners and that impressive record includes the victories earned by Meme DeSantis and Ryan Godown on Saturday night. In the Late Models there have been six different winners out of seven features won as Mike Kellner and Wayne Pfeil added their names to the win list in front of a large turnout of fans.
The four feature program was brought about because the late model and modified features from May 23rd had been rained out and rescheduled as part of this program.
The opening feature, a 20 lapper for late models sponsored by Whelen, saw Wayne Pfeil set the early pace with young Mike Kellner getting the top spot on the 5th circuit. Once in front the Lansdale, PA racer was able to hold off challenges from Pfeil and Kyle Merkel to grab his first win of the season. Second spot went to Merkel (Gilbertsville) followed by Pfeil (Mohnton), Bill Henning (Lansdale) and Danny Snyder (Green Lane).
The four feature night saw “over 50” Meme DeSantis ride to his first Saturday night modified win of the season. He had won a special midweek modified event back on May 20.
Steve Young set the pace early in the 30 lapper and was able to survive a number of early race cautions. Kyle Follweiler went to the front but ended up being bounced by another competitor and was out of the event. With one third of the race in the record books Keith Brightbill took charge while eventual winner DeSantis was busy working his way through the field from his 13th starting spot. On the 16th circuit Craig VonDohren charged from fifth to second in one quick maneuver but one lap later a blown tire put him out of action.
DeSantis (Temple, PA) went to the front on the 18th lap and was able to hold off a late race effort by point leader Duane Howard (Oley) to get the win. Billy Pauch Jr. (Frenchtown, NJ) finished third while Doug Manmiller (Shoemakersville) came from 28th to finish fourth followed by Brightbill (Reading).
Rookie Andy Ressler charged to the front on the drop of the green for the second 20-lap late model feature but Wayne Pfeil was quick to storm by him and take the lead before the first lap was completed. Once in front Pfeil (Mohnton) was not going to be denied his first career feature win at Grandview as he held off challenges from Ressler and Kyle Merkel. The two challengers presented “dueling spins” with four laps to go opening the way for Randy Stoudt to challenge the leader. Stoudt’s efforts fell short with Pfeil able to put his JRPI Company No. 72 in victory lane. Stoudt (Pottstown) finished second followed by Brian Shuey (Shoemakersville), John Giesler (Aston) and Ron Kline (Salfordville).
The final feature of the night, a 30-lapper for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, had Troy Wink going to the front in his new Gary Wagner Llandco No. 44m mount. On the third circuit Billy Pauch Jr. got an assist into the first turn wall putting him out of action and Ryan Godown took command of the race. Tom Umbenhauer put tremendous pressure on the leader lap after lap but on the 24th circuit of the clay oval Umbenhauer took his No. 19 Clay Realty entry to the infield with mechanical problems.
Godown (Ringoes, NJ) was able to keep control of the top spot and bring the Johnny Rae owned Abbi Electric/Stanton Hills Landscaping No. R1 home first for his first win of the season. Don Norris (Douglassville) had his best effort of the season bringing the Limerick Diner No. 976 home second followed by Meme DeSantis (Temple) coming from 16th starting spot. Jason Hamilton (Erwinna) finished fourth with Duane Howard (Oley) increasing his point lead in the NASCAR 358 modifieds with a fifth place finish.
The two modified consolation events left from the May 23rd rainout were won by Jon Kellner Jr. and Ryan Godown.
Qualifying events for the regularly scheduled night of racing were won by Wayne Pfeil, Ron Kline and Mike Kellner in the late models. In the modifieds the qualify heat victories were earned by Tom Umbenhauer, Don Norris, Billy Pauch Jr. and Godown. The consolation race wins went to Keith Brightbill and Jon Kellner Jr.
Cornerstone Auto Sales of Fleetwood, PA Hard Charger awards (unofficially) went to Meme DeSantis (16th to 3rd in the final modified feature), Ron Kline (went from 15th to 7th in the first late model feature), Doug Manmiller (started 28th in the first modified feature and finished 4th) and Mike Kellner (went from 16th to 8th in the second late model feature).
Dan’s Deli Halfway Leader awards were earned by Wayne Pfeil and Mike Kellner in the late models while Ryan Godown and Keith Brightbill got the awards in the modified features.
Cargo Trailer Sales $50 gift certificates went to the 10th place finishers in each feature race.
