Race Results 05/06/2006

Bechtelsville, Pa. ? The season at Grandview Speedway didn?t start off very well for five-time defending NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series modified point champion Jeff Strunk with new car-owner Johnny Rea. Things progressed, but after engine problems sidelined him from competition last Saturday night, the two went their separate ways earlier in the week. This left Strunk with what many thought ? rideless. Much to their dismay, he managed to make connections and got support from Wills Painting owned by Will Swoyer; a former successful car owner Glenn Hyneman; Donnie Miller; Matt Reidenauer of Touch of Green Landscaping, Big Spring Car Wash plus others and the  familiar No. 88 was back.

Strunk proved that with his determination he still knew the way to victory lane as he was there at the conclusion of the 30-lap event despite having to change  carburetors between the sixth heat and the start of the feature. The race was dedicated to Pvt. 1st Class Travis Zimmerman, 19, of New Berlinville, who was killed in action in Baghdad.

Before the first lap was completed, polesitter Brad Missimer spun in the second turn. It could have proved to be a major incident, but heads up driving on the part of the other competitors avoided it. Todd Smith was the early leader once action resumed, trailed by Don Norris Jr., Strunk, Shawn Reimert and Tom Mayberry.

The lead changed on the third lap as Strunk charged to the head of the pack to become the new pacesetter.       Jon Kellner Jr. brought out the yellow with six laps completed when he hit the third turn wall and the car sustained heavy damage ending his night. Strunk held onto the lead on the restart. Norris Jr., who was running a solid second, spun in the fourth turn for the  next caution period one lap later.   The restart was void as Ray Swinehart spun between the third and fourth turn. It was still Strunk in command when action went green again.

Within no time Strunk had a comfortable lead built up. While Reimert and Smith chased him down, the battle for fourth  was a four-way one between Tracy Readinger, John Willman, Mayberry, Cliff Quinn, Kenny Gilmore and Tom Umbenhauer as they were bumper-to-bumper just waiting for a mistake.

Just as Strunk was approaching lap traffic, the field was regrouped when Ray Swinehart stopped in the fourth turn with 18 laps in the books. It was still Strunk showing the way with Reimert, Willman, Smith and Umbenhauer trying to change the status.

Craig Von Dohren Was spun along the backstretch to bring out the yellow with 28 laps and gave everyone one last chance at Strunk, who had built up a lead again. Strunk didn?t hesitate on the restart and kept everyone behind him.

When the checkered unfurled, Strunk was in the Winner?s Circle for his 34th career win at the track followed by Reimert, Willman, Umbenhauer and Meitzler, who all turned in their season best finishes. Rounding out the top ten, which many had their best performances, were Ryan Watt, Smith, Tracy Readinger, Meme DeSantis and Larry Solomon.
