Bechtelsville, Pa. ? Six-time defending Grandview Speedway modified point champion Craig Von Dohren picked the best place to be to celebrate an early birthday ? in the winner?s circle at the conclusion of the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series modified feature on Saturday night for his fifth win of the season at the track. He narrowly beat out runner-up Duane Howard, who regained control of the point battle since Jeff Strunk, the leader going into the feature, dropped out early.

Before the first lap could be completed, Brad Missimer and one-time feature winner Tommy Scheetz Jr. were against the homestretch boilerplate out of competition.

Chris Esposito took the early lead once action resumed trailed by Sean Merkel, Glenn Owens, Meme DeSantis and Jon Kellner Jr.

Merkel, who already has two feature wins to his credit this year, became the new leader on the fourth lap in search of another victory.

Von Dohren advanced to second on the seventh lap to pressure Merkel for the top spot.

Esposito, while running fifth, spun between the third and fourth turn to bring out the yellow on the ninth lap. Von Dohren wasted no time to put the Felty Farms/Stauffer Construction/Main Engines powered No. 1C into the lead on the restart.

Strunk brought out the caution one lap later when he stopped along the homestretch with mechanical problems. Von Dohren remained in first on the restart, but now he was being challenged by DeSantis and Howard followed by Merkel and John Willman.

The sizeable lead Von Dohren built up was erased when Esposito was against the homestretch wall causing the yellow to be displayed with 15 lap in the books. DeSantis got the edge on Von Dohren to set the pace for one lap on the restart, but that quick Von Dohren was back in front again.

Von Dohren stuck to the low side and DeSantis ran the high line as the pair dueled for the top spot.

A second turn spin by Danny Erb caused another yellow on the 18th lap. Von Dohren maintained his position when racing went green again with DeSantis and Howard just waiting for a slip-up.

Howard took over second on the 20th lap and set his sights on Von Dohren.

By the 26th lap Von Dohren encountered lap traffic and Howard was closing in fast.

The pack was regrouped with two laps to go as Danny Erb stopped in the fourth turn. Von Dohren didn?t hesitate on the restart as he knew Howard was right there to jeopardize if he faltered. At one point Howard  had his nose in front, but Von Dohren managed to maintain the lead.

Von Dohren never surrendered the lead again and pulled into victory lane by inches over Howard. Following them across the line were Kevin Hirthler, DeSantis and Ryan Watt.
