Race Results 08/25/2007

Bechtelsville, Pa. ? Kevin Hirthler, behind the wheel of the Green Lane/Wm. Penn/4-Star Lettering No. 117, has been in contention on occasions to win a 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series feature at Grandview Speedway, but couldn?t accomplish the feat. Saturday night Hirthler overcame all obstacles, including rain during the event, and won his first-ever career victory at the 1/3-mile oval in the event sponsored by Midlantic Machinery Inc.

Before the first lap could be scored, Jason Hamilton spun in the first turn to bring out the yellow.

Glenn Owens was the early pacesetter once action resumed with pressure coming from Bobby Gunther-Walsh, Marc Fehr, Todd Smith and Jon Kellner Jr.

One lap later the caution was displayed for John Tschudy?s second turn spin. At the same time Rick Schaffer and Duane Howard got hooked together on the backstretch. All three continued. The restart was void for a three-car tangle in the first and second turn that eliminated Sean Merkel. Owens was still the leader on the restart, but by this time the order behind him was comprised of Hirthler, Kellner Jr., Kerry Kratz and John Willman.

The lead changed on the fifth lap as Hirthler powered into the number one position.

Schaffer, Shawn Reimert and Vince Gagliardo tangled in the third turn on the seventh lap for the next caution period. Schaffer was the only one able to continue.

It was still Hirthler at the head of the pack with Kellner Jr. now in the runner-up spot in pursuit of his first win.

By the 12th lap it started to rain, but Hirthler continued to increase the distance between himself and his fellow competitors. He continued to be chased down by Kellner Jr., Kratz, Owens and now Mike Gular. Doug Manmiller joined the thick of the battle on the 14th lap.

By the 20th lap Hirthler approached the slower-moving traffic and had to use heads-up driving, but he still maintained a comfortable margin.

No one was able to close in on Hirthler to attempt to challenge him as no more restarts were needed after the ninth lap.

At the drop of the checkered Hirthler claimed a well-deserved first win by a sizeable margin over Kellner Jr., who congratulated him in victory lane; Kratz, Gular and Manmiller.

Glenn Owens, Kevin Hirthler, Marc Fehr and Sean Merkel won the heats. The consi winners were Doug Manmiller and Rick Schaffer.

Next Saturday, September 1 will be the final point race. Jeff Strunk leads Duane Howard by 12 points. Howard was the point leader at the beginning of the show, but a 12th place feature finish proved costly as Strunk finished sixth.
