Bechtelsville, PA May 4, 2008 . . . ~ Coming from 14th starting spot Duane Howard was able to take the lead on the 15th lap and hold off current point leader and six time track champion Jeff Strunk to win the 30 lap Checkered Flag Fan Club NASCAR Modified stock car feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. In the 20-lap Late Model feature Brian Shuey got his third win of the season and Paul Rochelle was first in the Legends stock car feature.
Steve Young led the field of 30 Modifieds to the green flag and set the pace for the first four laps. At the four lap marker several cars were caught up in a turn four tangle and on the restart Young spun in front of the field bringing out the second caution.
With Young going to the back of the field Todd Marburger went to the front with Todd Smith and Terry Meitzler chasing him.
At the 12 lap marker Marburger still set the pace with Smith and Duane Howard following. Strunk had moved into fifth after having started in 21st spot.
At the midway marker Howard was able to put the BPG Racing No. 4 in front of the field with Marburger holding on to second and Jeff Strunk in third. Just one lap later Strunk was able to put the Gold Rush Custom Trailers No. 126 in second spot.
A multi car accident brought out the caution at this point and on the restart Strunk and Howard went side-by-side with Howard holding the edge.
With 20-laps complete the top five consisted of Howard, Strunk, Kerry Kratz, Todd Smith and Meitzler.
With two laps to go early leader Todd Marburger spun in turn two bringing out a caution. The restart allowed Strunk to close up on Howard but could not make the pass.
Howard, who calls Oley, PA home, was able to hold on to the number one spot passing under the checkered flag with a comfortable margin over Strunk (Mohnton) followed by Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) who came from 20th starting spot. Fourth went to Todd Smith (Hatfield) in one of the best finishes of his career. Ryan Godown (Ringoes) finished fifth.
?The last couple weeks we were junk here,? said Howard in victory lane. ?We really got pumped since last Thursday.? Howard was referring to breaking a track record at Virginia Motor Speedway and finishing second in a DIRT sanctioned big block modified race. On Friday night he gained a second to Billy Pauch Jr. at Big Diamond Raceway.
Four time Late Model champion Dean Stoudt went to the front at the drop of the green for the 20-lap Late Model feature. Ron Kline challenged but had to settle in at second.
By the eighth lap Brian Shuey was in third and challenging the leaders.
Shuey made what could be considered the move of the night, perhaps the move of the season, when he went to the outside in turn two and went three abreast with Stoudt and Kline to take the lead.
Once in front Shuey (Shoemakersville) had a relatively easy time of it winning his third of the season with his Master Built Bob Fisher Chevy sponsored entry.
Ron Kline (Salford) held on to gain a second place finish for his best effort of the season. Third was earned by Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale) followed by Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Randy Stoudt (Pottstown).
Randy Kissinger was quick to take command of the 15-lap Legends feature but Jason Rochelle charged up through the pack to challenge him on the third lap and by the sixth lap Rochelle was in front of the field.
