KELLNERS, FATHER AND SON, GIVE MOM A BIG MOTHER?S DAY GIFT AS THEY EACH WIN A FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
The father and son trips to victory lane in the same night is a first in track history.
The 30-lap Modified feature, with 29 cars taking the green, had veteran Randy Bailey jumping in front of the pack. At the five lap mark Bailey, left with no place to go, rammed into Sean Merkel?s #118 as Merkel tried to get his slowing racer into the infield. Jon Kellner Sr., who calls Lansdale home, inherited the lead with Cliff Quinn right on his rear bumper.
At the midway point Kellner was holding off the challenges of Rick Schaffer and Jeff Strunk (who had come from 14th starting spot). A multi-car accident on the 19th lap eliminated Doug Manmiller from contention for the victory as he was running in the top five. Kellner continued to dominate the action with Jeff Strunk, the four time track champion and current point leader in second. Craig VonDohren had come from 29th to be in a challenging third place position. And that is the way the field crossed the finish line with Kellner picking up his first win of the season. Jeff Strunk (Bethel) was second followed by VonDohren (Oley), Rick Schaffer (Woxall) and Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie).
Dean Stoudt, a four time track Late Model champion, dominated the early action in the 20-lap Late Model feature. A third turn accident brought on by over anxious racers on a restart after a caution brought out a red flag stopping the feature. On the restart Stoudt was back in front with his Scott Communications #77 and continued to be the man to beat as Rick Todorow held down second. With just a few laps left Mike Kellner, a high school student from Lansdale, brought the fans to their feet with an exciting pass that had him between the new fourth turn guard rail and leader Dean Stoudt. Kellner got the top spot and was able to stay out front for the final laps. Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) had one final chance to regain the lead on a restart after a caution with one lap to go but had to settle for second. Third spot went Rick Todorow (Quakertown) followed by Harry Neiman (Bear, Delaware) and Brian Shuey (Hamburg).
Qualifying heat races for the more than 50 Modifieds on hand were won by Randy Bailey (Kutztown), Cliff Quinn (Coopersburg), John Willman (Birdsboro), Doug Man miller (Wyomissing) and Terry Meitzler (Kutztown). Wins in the three consolation races were earned by Craig VonDohren (Oley), Tracy Readinger (Oley) and Keith Bright bill (Mohnton) while the Cheers Tavern Cash Dash was won by Doug Manmiller.
In Late Model qualifiers victories went to Dean Stoudt, Brian Shuey and Mike Kellner while the consolation was won by Lou Egrie (Willow Grove). Dean Stoudt won the Jim Brown Cash Dash.
Despite three red flag situations during the evening?s events racing was completed, 16 events of stock car racing, in little more than three hours.
