Race Results 06/30/2007

Bechtelsville, Pa. ? Jeff Strunk, behind the wheel of the Glenn Hyneman-owned, Touch of Green Landscaping No. 126, took the lead early in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelan All-American Series modified feature on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. The former point champion then had to hold off the challenges of current point leader Duane Howard and Meme DeSantis to win his second feature of the season at the 1/3-mile

oval. For his efforts, Strunk picked up an extra $100 from race sponsor Allstate Insurance since he also won the race last year the night they were the event sponsors.

Randy Bailey was the pacesetter on the initial start trailed by Glenn Owens, Sean Merkel, Brad Missimer and Jon Kellner Jr.

A five-car tangle in the fourth turn brought out the yellow with two laps completed. Bailey was still first when action continued, but a change of events had the order behind him comprised of Kyle Weiss, Jason Hamilton, Danny Erb and Kevin Hirthler.

The caution was displayed again on the fourth lap for a fourth turn mix-up. The restart was void as Danny Erb found himself into the homestretch wall with hard impact as cars got crossed up out of four. Erb was uninjured, but the car sustained heavy damage. Hirthler also went pitside after the incident. The next attempt was void after Hamilton made contact with Weiss sending both of them slamming into the frontshute wall with brut force. Neither driver was injured, but both cars had major damage.

After three attempts, another lap was completed with Bailey at the front of the pack but now he was being pressured by Strunk, Kellner Jr., Howard and Merkel.

Merkel, who was running a strong fifth, stopped in the fourth turn just as Strunk moved the Gold Rush Trailers mount into the lead to bring out the yellow on the sixth lap. It was still Strunk in the lead on the restart, but Howard was now second and the battle began.

Strunk held the high line while Howard tried to dive underneath, but every attempt failed. In a few laps the pair switched lanes, but Strunk still managed to keep Howard in tow. Waiting in the wings for a slip-up were DeSantis, who was coming on strong after going to the rear on the second lap restart when he made a quick pit stop and rejoined the pack in time; Bailey and Doug Manmiller, in his own No. 00.

Bailey was sidelined once again when he stopped in the second turn bringing out the yellow on the 12th lap. The leader continued to be Strunk on the restart while the fight for second was between Howard and DeSantis. DeSantis was able to get by Howard on the 14th lap and now set his sights on Strunk.

By the 22nd lap Strunk was able to build up a slight margin through the aid of the tight race for the runner-up spot between DeSantis and Howard. Completing the top five were Manmiller and Mike Gular, who was coming up through the pack after going to the back of the pack when he was involved in an earlier accident.

Strunk was able to survive the yellow flag fever and keep all competitors behind him throughout the race and at the wave of the checkered he chalked  up his 43rd Saturday night career victory. With one to go Howard got by DeSantis, who was experiencing problems, for the runner-up spot. Third then went to DeSantis followed by Manmiller and Gular.
