REIMERT, DESANTIS AND SCHUTZ WIN FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW
BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 24, 2003 . . . Veteran racers Shawn Reimert and Meme DeSantis shared victories in the Waste Management Twin-20 lap feature events for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. The 20-lapper for Late Models went to Chuck Schutz for his third win of the season.
The first 20-lap feature for modifieds saw Jon Kellner Jr. jump to the front and lead the 29 car starting field. At the 2nd lap, after a restart for a caution, Ryan Watt took control and looked like he might be on his way to his first career feature win. With 12 laps in the record book Watt spun, while leading, coming off the fourth turn putting him to the back of the pack and Shawn Reimert got the lead.
Reimert, who calls Oley home, held off Tracy Readinger who was seeking to win his first main event. At the finish Reimert, riding to his first victory since August 1998, had the Kochel Equipment sponsored entry just a car length or so in front of Readinger when the checkered flag fell. Readinger (Oley) finished second followed by Doug Manmiller (Wyomissing), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) and Meme DeSantis (Temple).
While the modified teams were busy getting ready for the second 20-lap feature, the late models presented an action pack 20 lapper of their own. Mike Steinmetz came from the pole to lead the 26 car starting field early with Harry Neiman getting the front and looking like he was on the way to his first win. Sam Schlosberg put his mount in front with eight laps completed.
At 14 laps Chuck Schutz put his Total Rental sponsored entry in front of the field after a side-by-side battle with Schlosberg. Once in front Schutz (Pottstown) was able to take a comfortable win for his third feature victory of the season. Second spot went to Sam Schlosberg (Green Lane), Ron Kline (Salfordville), Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) and Harry Neiman, Jr. (Pottstown).
The second 20-lap main event for the modifieds Kerry Kratz getting the front spot and leading the 29 car field for most of the first half of the feature. Meme DeSantis got to the front, after starting eighth, at the midway point. At 15 laps DeSantis was getting some pressure from Kenny Gilmore.
At the finish DeSantis (Temple), in the Norm’s Save Station #357, had a comfortable margin of victory earning his fourth feature win of the season. Second spot went to Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood) followed by Donny Erb (Douglassville), Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) and Craig VonDohren (Oley).
DeSantis moved in front of the NASCAR Modified point standings as a result his win and fifth place finish while Jeff Strunk, who led the track standings and the New England Regional Series standings, was involved in an early race accident in the first feature putting him out of action and in the second event was not a factor.
Qualifying heats for the modifieds were won by Barry Readinger, Meme DeSantis, Kenny Gilmore, Rick Schaffer and Jeff Strunk. The consolation events went to Keith Brightbill, Kevin Hartnett and Kevin Hirthler. The Cash Dash, worth more than $300, went to Strunk.
