Bechtelsville, Pa. ? Duane Howard, behind the wheel of the BPG/Chad Sinon No. 4, was in two battles with Jeff Strunk on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. Howard narrowly defeated Strunk down to the wire in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series modified feature plus he was in a close point battle with him.

Howard was able to win his fifth feature of the season, but he lost the quest for the championship by one point as Strunk was crowned the 2007 point champion for his sixth title in the event sponsored by Wm. Penn Green Lane/4-Star Lettering.

Marc Fehr set the pace for five laps before the yellow came out when Meme DeSantis and Ryan Watt tangled along the homestretch. On the restart Don Norris Jr. overtook Fehr to become the new leader.

The action for positions behind Norris Jr. was hot and heavy between Fehr, John Willman, Howard, who was on the move and Craig Von Dohren.

Ray Swinehart stopped along the fourth turn wall with a flat right rear tire for the next caution with 10 laps completed. The restart was void as Von Dohren did a 360 degree spin and kept going. This restart Howard, who moved into second on the ninth lap, put the Mavericks Motorcycles mount at the front of the pack.

While Howard set the pace and was gaining ground, Norris Jr., Strunk, Jason Hamilton and Willman jockeyed for the remaining positions.

Strunk advanced to second on the 20th lap and took chase after Howard who began to approach the slower moving traffic.

Lap cars caused Howard, who stuck to the inside lane, to ease up the pace somewhat with five laps to go and Strunk, running the high line was reeling him in.

Strunk was right on Howard?s bumper as the pair took the one lap to go signal as the race was still up for grabs.

Coming in for the checkered Strunk challenged Howard one last time as it was a drag race to the finish line. Howard was victorious by .040 seconds over Strunk followed by last week?s feature winner Kevin Hirthler, Norris Jr. and Hamilton.

Mark Kratz, Craig Von Dohren, Jon Kellner Jr. and John Willman won the heats. The consies were won by Danny Erb and John Tschudy.

Many used this week as a tune up for the THP Freedom 76 on Saturday, September 8th with $20,000 going to the winner. Several drivers that are not regulars are expected to compete in the event.
