Bechtelsville, Pa. ? Duane Howard overtook Meme DeSantis on the 22nd lap of the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series modified feature on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway and went on to chalk up his third victory of the season at the track. The event was sponsored by Green lane Wm. Penn/4-Star Lettering.
Howard, who won the first and final point races, once again fell short in his quest for a championship for BPG Racing. Jeff Strunk won his eighth championship at the 1/3-mile oval driving the Vince Gagliardo-owned No. 41. It was Gagliardo?s first championship since his involvement in racing ? something he?s been in for several years. Before the first lap could be recorded, a multi-car first turn accident brought out the red since the track was blocked. Out of competition were Craig Von Dohren, Billy Pauch Jr., Brad Missimer, Keith Hoffman, Mike Gular and Shawn Reimert.
When action went green again Todd Marburger was the early race leader trailed by John Tschudy, Jeremy Banos, Troy Wink and Todd Smith. A second turn tangle between Jason Hamilton and Kevin Hirthler brought out the yellow on the sixth lap. Marburger was still the pacesetter on the restart, but now Wink was in a challenging position putting his bids in for the lead.
While Marburger and Wink battled side-by-side for the lead, the action behind them for the remaining positions was hot and heavy between Danny Erb, DeSantis and Ryan Grim. Trying to get into a top five spot was Howard, who had to go to the rear of the field after being involved in the first turn incident at the start.
On the 13th lap DeSantis made a bold move from fourth into the lead. By the Dan?s Deli 1/2-way hoagie mark, the order behind DeSantis consisted of Marburger, Wink, Erb and Howard.
Howard advanced to second on the 19th lap and set his sights on DeSantis. Erb, who was beginning to lose positions, brought out the yellow on the 21st lap as a result of a flat tire. At the same time Doug Manmiller also pitted with a flat tire. Erb rejoined the race, but Manmiller was through for the night. The restart was brought back to the line as rookie Addison Meitzler, already a feature winner this year, stopped in the second turn. On the next attempt Howard became the new leader while DeSantis, Ryan Godown, Keith Brightbill and Hamilton diced for positions. No one was able to overtake Howard as he went on to score the victory. Following Howard across the line were DeSantis, Godown, Hamilton and Brightbill. Sixth through tenth were Strunk, who was just biding his time since he knew what he had to do; Marburger, John Willman, who received the CornerStone Auto Sales Hard Charger Award; Terry Meitzler and Wink.
Heats were won by Ryan Beltz, Tschudy, Gular and Tom Umbenhauer. Von Dohren and Brightbill won the consies.
These same drivers plus a host of others will be competing in the 39th annual BPG Freedom 76 on Saturday, September 12 with $20,000 going to the winner.
